Research

My research interests are in experimental computer systems, including cloud/edge, big-data/machine-learning, and high-performance computing systems as well as operating systems and storage systems in general. I am also highly interested in the cross-disciplinary studies that bridge systems research with other domains, and I have worked with applications from computational physics and chemistry, each sciences, biomedicine, neuroscience, transportation, social science and psychology etc.

My research efforts are targeted to generate both fundamental scientific values and practical societal impacts. I have published over 90 peer-reviewed articles on premiere computer systems conferences and journals, which have been cited more than 3200 times. My research outcomes have also been adopted by several production systems in the industry. My research has been funded by the National Science Foundation, the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Defense, and industry companies.

I have received the National Science Foundation CAREER award, ASEE Air Force Summer Faculty Fellowship, AWS Machine Learning Research AwardVMware Faculty Award, Intel Faculty AwardExcellence in Mentoring award, Excellence in Research award, and Best Paper award of the International Conference on Autonomic Computing. My PhD students have received the McKnight Doctoral Fellowship, ASEE Air Force Summer Student Fellowship, VMware Graduate Fellowship, and SCAI Doctoral Fellowship.

Education

My teaching efforts are carried out in a symbiotic fashion with my research activities. I innovate in teaching by using the outcomes of my research to develop novel education materials and infrastructure, while the outcomes of my teaching also provide invaluable feedback and prepare important workforce for my further innovation in research.

I have created several courses on new computing technologies (e.g., virtualization and cloud computing) and made substantial improvements to courses on classic topics (e.g., operating systems) to teach students both the fundamental knowledge and practical skills of computing and storage systems. I have created a unique virtualization-based online education infrastructure, vMoodle, to improve teaching using advanced cloud, mobile, and social networks technologies.

I have mentored many doctoral, master, undergraduate, and high-school students. My students have been highly prolific in their research, presenting papers in top conferences (ICAC, FAST, HPDC, SEC, ATC, IPDPS, etc.) and attending internships in industry (AWS, VMware, Marvell, Toyota Labs, etc.) and federal labs (Sandia, Los Alamos, Air Force Research Lab, etc.) Many students have joined leading industry companies (Google, AWS, Microsoft, IBM Research, Samsung Research, etc.) after graduation.

I am dedicated to broadening the participation of students from underrepresented groups in computing, and have mentored and supported many female, Hispanic, and African American students.

Services

I have been actively contributing my services to the activities of my research communities. I have served as the General Chair for ACM HPDC, a top conference on high performance distributed computing and General Co-Chair for ACM/IEEE SEC, the flagship conference on edge computing. I have co-organized the NSF community visioning workshop on Data Storage Research 2025, which gathered together the leading researchers and practitioners in the storage field to help define the future directions for data storage research. I have also served as the Program Committee (PC) Chair for USENIX FeedbackComputing, a unique workshop on feedback control in computing, and USENIX HotEdge, the flagship workshop on edge computing.

I am currently a Senior Associate Editor of ACM Transactions on Storage (TOS) and an Associate Editor of the Frontiers in High Performance Computing. I served on the review board of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) which is the largest funder of scientific research in Canada from 2020 to 2022.
